A conversation w/ @leelz in the midst of a pillow fight

@leelz, “There’s no way you’ll beat me, Dad. I’ve got the Excalibur,” referring to his pillow. You see, he wields them like a sword. Or, like an ax.

After round three…
@leelz, “Dad, let’s switch swords (read, pillows). I think you got the Excalibur.”

Which piece of advice will work?

We need our kids’ help keeping the house clean. They’re now old enough to help us.

This morning, Hayley and I gave the kids the following advice: Hayley said, “Having a dirty house makes it easier for you to get sick.” I followed up with, “Having a clean house makes it harder for your parents to lecture you.”

Can we get some of those fancy glasses that are like triangles at the top? … We could use them to make “aqueous martinis”. Oh, and, we’ll need olives. Could you get olives?

Gearing up for life with (an) Android

The out-of-the-box experience with a Motorola Droid device pulls me in two different directions. First, I was excited by it’s features, getting into a new interactive dialogue style, and the introductory nature of the moment. Second, I felt figuratively disabled by the inability to take screen captures of every new screen I would see.

When this current project (for which I study this device) started, we were going to do iPhone and Android app work concurrently. That quickly changed to iPhone first and Android second. (A good decision.) I spent enough time with the Android back then to find out that you have to exert a bit of advanced effort to enable capturing screenshots.

To contrast product definition styles, I point to the iPad’s ability to capture screenshots by default, even though it doesn’t have a camera.

Quite a thing to ponder as you wander your way through different product spaces. Seeing how each shop’s signature in how it expresses itself in dialogue, and how it connects with you.

They present Android as a platform and OS that turns you into an android/cyborg/robot as you use it. This device has enough problems connecting with me that it won’t turn my human biomass container into a metal machine.

Scoring the week, as it were

Driving home from work today, I found myself collecting the “good” and “bad” things that happened this week. By the time I got home, I told @HayleyC I had a “wins and losses” for the week.

Now, whatever. I have no scoring algorithm.

What I see now is meta. It’s a meta-win to have reached this point: Where I collect my thoughts at the end of the week. Having reached this suggests I’m going in the right direction, though it doesn’t tell me how, exactly. It gets complicated quickly. I’ll reserve judgment, think about it a bit more, but I won’t ascribe causes.

I used to get all bent out of shape on Fridays, wondering if I’d “accomplished” everything I needed to do. Then, I’d dream up a huge storm of to-dos. A storm comes, stays a while, and passes when you’re not looking anymore.

Years longing for the ability to simply collect the events litter Fridays past. “Simply” hear means recalling, remembering, accounting for, and making sense of the events of the week. That is done without emotional harakiri. Without.

A precipitate. Not simply a lesson learned. It’s so enlivening to realize your thought patterns changing. So enlivening to realize you’re playing a role in the analysis and feedback.

Question

beckysherman asked: Hey there what helped you make the dec. to use Tumblr vs wordpress, joomia, drupal, etc?

I stopped trying to make the decision on which one to use, and started using them all. Then, you get the hang of which ones work best for which ideas you have.

I don’t blog/post often, but I like using Tumblr for more spontaneous ideas. I like Wordpress (themography.com) for posting more thoughtful or serious ideas.

hope that helps.

Worst attempt to mimic Gmail in a phishing attempt.

Maybe I’m primed to notice this is a hoax because I’m aware of hoaxes like this. Maybe, it’s because I’m familiar with how exacting Google can be with its design and security practices.
Enjoy.
